Are you saying that the engine won't crank? The problem is likely your key. It needs to be aligned with the EWS anti-theft system. There's a procedure to align the key and the EWS.

As others have suggested, try to alight ews-dme with inpa, bmw scanner, or whatever software you have. However, I had the issue where key's rolling code would not match, and the problem was that key could not be written to anymore.

I don't know if the chip on the key has a limited amount of writes and even if it does it shouldn't really be hit that fast unless something else is tripping.

In my case ews was tripping the key by trying to write to it too many times and it is still doing it to my new key. Google 'EWS delete' and take the rest of your life reading a tsunami of frustrated complaints about 'no start issues' etc. There are a few fixes out there and I found one after a couple of failures from doubtful suppliers. Please Help me! Thanks :-D. It lives!!! INPA aligned the ews, and after cranking a while it sputtered to life. I went to ME 7. So I tried option F2 and it gave a message German that said starting value understood and accepted. Now I just need to put some fresh gas in it, put a seat back in the driver's spot, and take it for a spin.

What is INPA? Is that a programme?? Sorry you must hate people like me! I'm not sure how true that is. INPA can be had cheaply on ebay, or you can usually find it on a Torrent site.

Its in the reprogramming menu, and shouldnt be greyed out unless you arent using a full version of BMWScanner. Its faster and more reliable then the INPA one in my opinion. In particular the EWS - Immobilizer not allowing the car to start. The keys that came with the car have a small transponder chip in them even the valet key which doesn't have buttons which gets read by the car when the key is in the ignition. The transponder gets it's power from the EWS pickup coil located around the ignition switch. The code sent by the transponder is picked up by the EWS coil and compared with a list of good codes programmed from the factory.

If it's not on the list the EWS deactivates the starter motor. Everything will still work, radio, lights, doors, windows, everything. Just not the starter motor and you can't push start the car either since it tells the DME not to fire the injectors.

In some cases the car will intermittantly start with only 1 of the keys, the other keys start the car fine. In this case the problem is repairable with my key repair service. Be sure to let me know that the key is a no start key. It only powers the keyless entry portion of the remote lock, unlock and trunk release functions. The recoding procedure only codes the general module to the key for keyless entry, again it had nothing to do with the EWS system and will not help.

The only place to get a new working transponder is from the BMW dealer in a new key. Below is an E90 key that I tore apart. The EWS transponder coil is the black rectangle on the center left side and the EWS chip is the big rectangular chip in the upper left of the right picture.

It car does not have a general module and the remote is permanantely sync'd to the car. Again there is no key sync procedure. Anyone who says their is is wrong!. Rectangular keys like the one below do not have a key resync procedure and this also goes for diamond shaped keys for E60 or E For the first generation diamond shape key E39, E46, E52, E53, E83 and E85 the EWS transponder coil is 7 in the picture below and works in conjunctions with several other components on the board to support the immobilizer function.

If you are looking for a new key that will be able to start the engine you will need to buy from BMW. Any of the keys will start the engine, plastic wallet key, valet key or master remote key.

If you have the plastic wallet key or the valet key I might be able to turn that key into a remote key for a lot less than the dealer.I'm trying to help out a mate with a E65 or E66 maybe not clear on the difference! I could read the engine ECU error but trying to reset the ews throws a comms error and the script stops. It's very easy in dis, are you using a laptop or notebook? You can change screen res in the registry a simple 1 instead of a 0 and you will get full screen on you moniter, its nothing to do with vmplayer its your PC screen res.

Can you tell me where in the Registry I need to change 0 to 1? That worked a treat - I can now see all the buttons on the screen which makes it much easier to navigate! In DIS I cannot see it anywhere.

Tried Google but couldn't find anything either Would you, or any other members on here, know how please? Takes some time on my little notepad to get from one screen to the next sometimes. The error was "incorrect immobilizer telegrams received. Capture range calculation. I should have noted this down properly, but here goes I hope this will help someone else in my predicament!

Switch on terminal 15 is shown which means put the key in and switch on the ignition, but without the engine running well seeing as the car wouldn't start that was a no brainer! Locked it up and left is another 20mins and the tested starting again to be sure and it worked! Told the guy never to left the battery get that flat again!!!

No problem, I don't know how long you have had the cable but the latest DVD is just install and run only comport setting and ip setting for vmplayer and that's it. It uses ISO on the diag port. Google around INPA and you will find more information on it. Its a great tool to have anyways, you can read way more specific information from the cars computer besides the generic stuff that the OBD reader tells you.

Think how the Peake tool is advertised only this is what BMW dealers and factories use. I thought the same. Although there is still hope for a repair : It might not be to bad if all you have to do is attach the emulator to trick the DME and change the perimeters with the K-line tool. I already downloaded the software its pretty generic and looks easy lol :dunno: Even if the red label fixes my ride, when I get a few extra bucks I will buy the emulator and K-line tool and attempt to trick my silver DME I'm kinda of a car hoarder I will probably never sell this car, and I need a back -up.

We took the key apart and used the microchip inside to test whether it gets recognized by the immobilizer. The car regognized the chip when it was placed nearer to the keyhole than it would be when placed inside the key.

The key was taken to a microchip solder who resoldered all the connections on the circuit board and voila, the key worked as new after that. Had a really weird issue with my BMW d e Put the key in ignition, all lights turn on, but when starting, nothing.

No change in lights, no clicks, no cranking. So, I thought it is the immobilizer, anti theft or neutral clutch sensor. Or weak battery or bad key or faulty keyhole ignition system or just corroded terminals on the battery. Tried everything, even moving the car back and forth while in gear to put the starter in a different positon and tried to bang the starter a couple of times.

Tried opening the car via door lock with a key. Tried almost everything, but nothing helped. I was surprised that my battery only had Very unlikely that the car would start from that low voltage. So I need to charge the battery I thought. So I let it run for 2 hours with everything turned off to charge the battery.

Ps, to test the battery level voltage via your dashboard on BMW e46, go like this. Read the value means You are good with anything above 12V I could hear the pump hitting up the fuel, that was the only sound coming from outside. But I was playing around… and finally got it running.

Update: seems that this was only a temporary fix or a coincidence.

Testing the sytem — display panel. I am not sure what this does a reset? Hold on the left button on the dashboard trip counter reset button 2. When it says test, release it and press again until number 19, release button 3. Says off, quickly press again 4.

Press until 2 and release now everything turns on After doing this a couple of times the e46 started normally.
